Movieguide's review of the Hexed trailer lists a child using magic to escape a crib, a mother using crystals to protect her daughter, a spell book, witch symbols, transfiguration and a raven attacking a child, all from a trailer that aired during Monday Night Football on October 12. I walk through the premise: a girl expelled from school for an accidental magic outburst ends up in Hex, the world of witches, where she is told it was foretold she would become an extraordinary witch and save the world of magic from evil.
I connect this to Disney's long history with the occult going back to Fantasia in 1940, and I play the moment the villain tells the girl her magic power is inherited, saying "you get that from me." I read Deuteronomy 18:10-12, which calls these very practices an abomination to the Lord, and Galatians 5:19-20, which groups witchcraft with idolatry as a work of the flesh.
I bring in reaction clips from former psychic Jenn Nizza, who spent 25 years in divination before becoming a Christian, and from Catholic apologist Jesse Romero, both of whom raise serious concerns about how the film frames witchcraft as empowering rather than dangerous. I also read from Ellen White's Counsels on Future Life about the occult being embedded in entertainment and disguised as harmless.
I'm fair to Disney on one point: this is only a trailer, and the finished film, its rating and its full message are not yet known. But I explain why the marketing itself already tells you what emotional response the studio is going for, and I close by testing the whole thing against Isaiah 8:20.
