Nidal Hasan killed 13 people and wounded 32 at Fort Hood in 2009, was sentenced to death in 2013, and on October 2 President Trump approved a firing squad execution set for December 3. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told Real America's Voice the execution would be livestreamed, and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops answered the next day, calling it a barbaric promotion of a culture of death. A U.S. senator called the plan medieval, and on World Day Against the Death Penalty, Pope Leo XIV posted that the death penalty is inadmissible because it attacks the inviolability and dignity of the person.
I lay out what Scripture actually says about the state's power of the sword in Romans 13:4, and why this remains a government question I'm not settling here. Then I turn to what I think is the more important story: the head of a 1.3 billion member church publicly telling the United States government what it may and may not do with its own power over life and death, and doing it the same week he clashed with Trump on CNN. I bring in Daniel 7:25, Ellen White's words in Love Under Fire and The Great Controversy on Rome's claim to authority over civil law, and why I believe the shape of this moment, not the execution date itself, is what deserves our attention as students of Bible prophecy.
